Playgrounds are supposed to be safe places for children to have fun playing. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission states in its Public Playground Safety Handbook an average of 156,000 injuries occur annually on public playgrounds in the U.S., resulting in emergency room visits. It is estimated that 79% of these are caused by falls from playground equipment. This places enormous importance on not only the proper planning of playground equipment, but perhaps more importantly, the safety surfacing used. Here are the facts. All playground safety surfaces are supposed to be tested using standards established by ASTM F-1292 testing by independent laboratories. These tests now include two methods of measuring safety, over three established temperature ranges. The older method (ASTM F1292-04) measures the G-max. of impact using a straight drop, allowing a 200 G-max. to gain a passing grade. The newer method (ASTM F1292-09) measures the HIC (Head Impact Criteria) with a projectile traveling at an angle, where a max. of 1000 HIC gains a passing grade. Products with that high of a level of passing grade provide a 2% probability of fatal injury. That's right... FATAL! We don't find that acceptable, and hope you feel the same way. Needless to say, the lower the number on these respective tests, the safer the product, and SoftStuff is the SAFEST!

Most Other Playground Safety Surfaces Provide 2% PROBABILITY of FATAL Injury?
At the max. height other products are tested as “safe,” many products fall into the critical area near the 1,000 max. HIC score, which carries with it the widely unknown 2% probability that 1-in-50 kids could die from falling on those surfaces. At 6" depth from 17 feet, our HIC scores are mostly in the 600s!

Other Rubber Mulches Admit Their Product is Only 99.9% Wire Free?
What this really means is that children can and will find the exposed wire in those other products, in the form of perhaps 1/4" deep lacerations, and perhaps 150+ particulates per 100 lbs. will have this exposed wire. PermaLife SoftStuff from EcoGreen has ZERO exposed wire due to its cryo-processing.

While there are many competing products which have been tested and deemed acceptable, and there is more than enough data to establish the nature of injuries likely to be sustained for products at various ranges within these acceptable limits. The bottom line is that products at or near the upper ranges are likely to incur very substantial injuries, while those tested at or below the 70^th percentile of the respective acceptable limits (like SoftStuff) were significantly reduced. This is why most products won't provide their complete test data. They simply state that their product(s) has (have) been ASTM tested, and passed within the acceptable maximum limits allowed for both tests.
